What is a detox cleanse?

Let's talk some science here - detoxification is a metabolic process by which toxins stored in the body are changed into less toxic or more easy to excrete substances.


This involves the whole body – your gut and liver both play a mega role here, but so do your kidneys, lungs, skin and lymphatic (the sewerage) system. Our incredible body eliminates these detoxified substances via our gut (poos), kidneys (peeing), skin (sweating) and lungs (exhaling).

How does this differ to other detoxes?

When starting a detox, most people think of veggie juices and vividly green smoothies to extract all the vitamins and minerals. 


The issue with detox cleanses like the ‘Master cleanse’ program (yeah, you've seen them - lemon juice, cayenne pepper and maple syrup - *sigh*) for a few days or juice fasts is that there’s not enough of the essential macronutrient, PROTEIN coming in.

Protein has a crucial role in detoxification. Our liver enzymes and both phase I and II detoxification pathways rely on protein. Without protein, detoxification comes to a grinding halt. If you’re not providing your body with enough protein (in a healthy, not over doing the meat protein way), as part of a detox, or as part of your diet in general, than you're giving your liver the right tools to do it's very important job!
